Beara Way : Dursey Island

Day 6 : Sunday, 12th August.

Today actually was meant to be a resting day, but nevertheless Riny, Catherine and I did decide to walk the Dursey Spur on that beautiful Dursey Island. Evert really decides to have a good rest and stays to hang around Windy Point.

Ireland’s only cable car takes us across Dursey Sound, one of the most dangerous pieces of water on the Irish coastline, to the eastern end of this scenic island. Again we’re astonished by the number of car wrecks lying around near the landing place of the cable car. Really a disgrace! There is only one road on the island, which runs most of the way along the southern side of the island. We pass the remains of and old church and graveyard and continue our road through the hamlet of Kilmichael. The sad remains of the cottages of other days are all along the road.

Some miles passed Kilmichael we make a diversion (we won’t walk to Dursey Head) near the signal tower and continue the track on the other side back towards the landing place of the cable car. This place is alive with birds, unbelievable. This island is mostly the first landfall for birds that have accidentally crossed from America and is thus a real paradise for bird watchers. Again we take a ride across Dursey Sound in this lovely cable car and stay overnight again at Windy Point House.
